Cultural Differences....and Similarities

Mr. James Finn spoke about Panavision's Genesis camera in the workshop, "The Future of Film and Digital Acquisition. I took some notes, but they don't make any more sense to me than his talk did. I'm not a very technical person. I did go up afterward and look at his camera though and I met a couple of Egyptian men standing in line with whom I had a rather interesting conversation.
The line was rather long and one of the men behind me struck up a conversation. He and his friend were visitors from Egypt. He started asking questions about all the large, homeschooling families he had been seeing all week. He had apparently not done a lot of visiting in the States before, so what he saw there represented America to him. He wanted to know why we have large families and told me that in Egypt they have 1-2 children and then that's it. I explained that this group of people were not your average Americans and that most American families do have only 1-3 children. We believe that God is lord of the womb and He should be the One to decide the size of our families.
Then he asked me about birth control. Nothing inappropriate, that's just not a subject that I'm used to discussing with strangers in a public setting. I remember thinking that they must be much more open about these things in Egypt than we are here. I told him my personal beliefs as well as I could, but added that I didn't really know a whole lot about it as I'm not married.
I thought it was interesting though how different we truly are from the rest of the world. Here was a man telling me that in his country they have very few children just like in mine. If only those families who believe children are a reward from God truly did represent the majority of Americans. What a strong, flourishing country this would be!
